TORONTO, ON — October 15, 2025 — The Universal Muslim Association of America (UMAA) is proud to announce the monumental success of its 21st Annual Convention, held from October 10th to 12th at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre. The event, themed “The Global Shia Narrative: Identity, Challenges, and Opportunities,” drew a historic attendance of over 5,000 delegates, establishing a new benchmark for communal solidarity and intellectual vitality.
The Toronto convention, the first in the city in 15 years, successfully achieved its core mission: to bridge diverse segments of the global Shia Muslim community. The gathering saw scholars, community leaders, academics, and followers of various authoritative religious leaders converge under one roof for three days of rigorous spiritual growth and communal engagement.
Dr. Azmat Husain, President of UMAA, emphasized the profound significance of the achievement:
“The true beauty and triumph of this event was the unprecedented unity we witnessed. Bringing together various groups, new converts, and a diverse mix of people from Arab nations, India, and Pakistan, this convention was a powerful testament to Shia unity, which was our core objective. It was a truly historic convention that sets a new standard for our community’s solidarity.”
Focus on Identity and Global Engagement
The convention’s robust program explored the multifaceted experiences of Shia Muslims worldwide. Sessions delved into the theological principles and historical narratives that shape communal identity, while also tackling significant contemporary challenges such as political marginalization and media misrepresentation. A major focus was placed on critical opportunities for proactive interfaith dialogue and positive civic engagement in modern society.
Mustafa Abdi, Vice President of UMAA, noted that the enthusiasm confirms the global need for this platform. “The record attendance and high level of participation confirmed the global community’s deep interest in exploring the critical issues of identity and opportunity facing Shia Muslims today. UMAA is proud to have provided this vital platform for connection and constructive conversation.”
